Derek has been interested in wildlife from a very early age, encouraged by his Father who was a great countryman and was someone who spent most of his working life outdoors, and Derek would spend most of my school holidays with him.

As a qualified cabinetmaker he has worked with wood since he left school so it was a natural progression to start carving the wildlife that he enjoy so much. Derek uses found woods and mixes them with other woods he has in his workshop/studio at any given time, finishing the artworks with acrylic paints and waxes. Dereks carvings represents what he is able to see and observe in the characteristics of the subject.
